SmCo

Nowadays permanent magnets based on Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo5 and Sm2Co17) alloys have a combination of extremely high magnetic properties: high residual magnetic induction (Br), coercive force (Hci), high temperature stability and resistance to corrosion processes.

These characteristics make SmCo ideal for operation in high temperature conditions. SmCo sintered permanent magnets are also advisable to use in development of special devices with particularly stringent volume/weight requirements.

The disadvantages of SmCo magnets are high cost and brittleness. It is the most expensive among the available magnetic materials. Its high cost is determined by the use of expensive rare earth metals in it. In particular, samarium cleaning technology is expensive, as well as cobalt, which is widely used in the production of high grade steels.

Nevertheless, in many military developments, where stability and reliability are required, the price is of secondary importance, SmCo magnets are indispensable.

Main applications of REM magnets: Hall effect sensors, electric motors, generators, starters, acoustic systems, magnetron devices, electronic signal amplifiers, hard disk drives, dynamic small-sized speakers, magnetic couplings, motion sensors, electromechanical devices, magnetic separation systems, sweeps, lifting systems, motor-vehicles, chainsaws, outboard motors, motorcycles, snowmobiles, lawn mowers.

Advantages of Sm-Co magnets:

  • higher magnetic parameters compared with cast and ferrite magnets;
  • strong magnetic fields with small dimensions;
  • high temperature and timing stability;
  • relatively high resistance to corrosion;
  • relatively low resistance to mechanical stress;
  • operating temperature up to 330 ° С.
